Hempfield Ready to Overhaul Zoning Regulation

Hempfield supervisors are considering adopting a new zoning ordinance that would be the first major overhaul of the township’s law since 1978.

The township board will hold a public hearing Tuesday to listen to comments about the long-awaited changes. The hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Hempfield Area High School on Route 136.

The zoning ordinance has been amended a number of times during the past 30 years, but some of its regulations are out of date or do not conform with a Multimunicipal Comprehensive Plan adopted in 2005 that was jointly developed by the township, the city of Greensburg and the boroughs of South Greensburg and Southwest Greensburg.
Former Supervisor Bob Davidson said the new code will “push Hempfield into the 21st century.

“I probably pushed it harder than anyone else,” he said. “It’s taken too long. This zoning ordinance should have been approved last year. It was the board of supervisors’ fault.”
