Description
2011 Economic Exchange Day - "The Development of Marcellus Shale"

The Latrobe Area Chamber of Commerce Economic Exchange Day project this year  brought students from Greater Latrobe and Derry Area school districts together in a program that presented information about relevant economic issues and enabled students to interact and create related classroom projects.  They produced public service announcement brochures to educate the public about Marcellus shale, a rock formation that contains a large amount of mostly untrapped natural gas.  The event was not a debate, but an opportunity for the students to hear different viewpoints on the topic, as presented by a panel of experts.  The students also studied the issues beforehand, researching the effect that drilling into Marcellus Shale could have on their communities in the areas of water supplies, environmental protection, land use, business and the economy.
