According to the United States Department of Transportation, there has been a proportional decline from eighty percent (80%) to sixty-six percent (66%) in people killed “inside the vehicle” from 1996 to 2018. However, there has been a proportional increase of people killed “outside the vehicle” (motorcyclists, pedestrians, pedal cyclists, and other non-occupants) from a low of twenty percent (20%) in 1996 to a high of thirty-three percent (33%) in 2018. Therefore in some communities there is an increased risk of fatalities for pedestrians and bicyclists.
This webinar will present an overview of the safety issues related to traffic speed and pedestrians from a variety of perspectives. The webinar will cover safety statistics, speeding issues on local roads, and some speed management steps, an overview of planning for pedestrians, including what you should be aware of in your plans, codes, and ordinances and a discussion of crosswalks and proven safety countermeasures that you can consider for your crosswalks. Finally, the webinar will discuss the development of an Active Transportation Plan for your community.
